Functional morphology considers form and function to be intrinsically related. To understand organismal functions, a detailed knowledge of morphological and physiological traits is necessary. Regarding the respiratory system, the combined knowledge about pulmonary morphology and respiratory physiology is fundamental to understand how animals exchange gases and regulate critical functions to sustain metabolic activity. In the present study, the paucicameral lungs of Iguana iguana were analyzed morphometrically through stereological analysis using light and transmission electron images and compared with unicameral and multicameral lungs of six other non-avian reptiles. The morphological data were combined with physiological information to perform a principal component analysis (PCA) and phylogenetic tests of the relationship of the respiratory system. Iguana iguana, Lacerta viridis, and Salvator merianae presented similar pulmonary morphologies and physiologies when compared to Varanus examthematicus, Gekko gecko, Trachemys scripta, and Crocodylus niloticus. The former species showed an elevated respiratory surface area (%AR), a high diffusion capacity, a low volume of total parenchyma (VP), a low percentage of parenchyma concerning the lung volume (VL), and a higher surface/volume ratio of the parenchyma (SAR/VP), with high respiratory frequency (fR) and consequently total ventilation. The total parenchymal surface area (SA), effective parenchymal surface-to-volume ratio (SAR/VP), respiratory surface area (SAR), and anatomical diffusion factor (ADF) showed a phylogenetic signal, evidence that the morphological traits are more strongly correlated with the species' phylogeny than the physiological traits. In sum, our results indicated that the pulmonary morphology is intrinsically related to physiological traits of the respiratory system. Furthermore, phylogenetic signal tests also indicate that morphological traits are more likely to be evolutionary conserved than physiological traits, suggesting that evolutive physiological adaptations in the respiratory system could happen faster than morphological changes.

Personalized diagnosis of chronic disease requires capturing the continual pattern across the biological sequence. This repeating pattern in medical science is called "Motif". Motifs are the short, recurring patterns of biological sequences that are supposed signify some health disorder. They identify the binding sites for transcription factors that modulate and synchronize the gene expression. These motifs are important for the analysis and interpretation of various health issues like human disease, gene function, drug design, patient's conditions, etc. Searching for these patterns is an important step in unraveling the mechanisms of gene expression properly diagnose and treat chronic disease. Thus, motif identification has a vital role in healthcare studies and attracts many researchers. Numerous approaches have been characterized for the motif discovery process. This article attempts to review and analyze fifty-four of the most frequently found motif discovery processes/algorithms from different approaches and summarizes the discussion with their strengths and weaknesses.

We developed an ex silico evolutionary-based systematic synteny approach to define and name the duplicated genes in vertebrates. The first convention for the naming of genes relied on historical precedent, the order in the human genome, and mutant phenotypes in model systems. However, total-genome duplication that resulted in teleost genomes required the naming of duplicated orthologous genes (ohnologs) in a specific manner. Unfortunately, as we review here, such naming has no defined criteria, and some ohnologs and their orthologs have suffered from incorrect nomenclature, thus creating confusion in comparative genetics and disease modeling. We sought to overcome this barrier by establishing an ex silico evolutionary-based systematic approach to naming ohnologs in teleosts. We developed software and compared gene synteny in zebrafish using the spotted gar genome as a reference, representing the unduplicated ancestral state. Using new criteria, we identified several hundred potentially misnamed ohnologs and validated the principle manually. Also see the video abstract here: https://youtu.be/UKNLa_TvSgY.

Bats are unique among mammals in that they have evolved the capacity to fly. This has generated strong selective pressure on the morphology and function of their digestive system. Given that in bats intestinal length and nominal surface-area are proportional to body mass, this trait importantly relates to explaining some of their digestive characteristics. We described the relationship between digestive traits and body mass of four species of bats of the family Vespertilionidae living in a montane ecosystem in central Mexico. We calculated food transit time, apparent dry matter digestibility, and defecation rate in feeding trials under captive conditions. We also: (1) built a model of the relationship between digestive traits and body mass to determine if this association was consistent within the members of the family Vespertilionidae, and (2) mapped these traits along the phylogeny to explore how digestive characteristics may have evolved. In our feeding trials, body mass was positively related to transit time and negatively related to apparent dry matter digestibility. The model predicted accurately the transit time in bats with body mass < 20 g. The phylogenetic approach suggested that over the evolutionary history of the family, transit time decreased as digestibility increased. Because of the results obtained here, it is likely that for most bats of the family Vespertilionidae, adaptations in digestive traits to process food have followed evolutionary changes in their body mass. We discuss these findings in a physiological and ecological context.

Brain computer interface systems decode brain activities from electroencephalogram (EEG) signals and translate the user's intentions into commands to control and/or communicate with augmentative or assistive devices without activating any muscle or peripheral nerve. In this paper, we aimed to improve the accuracy of these systems using improved EEG signal processing techniques through a novel evolutionary approach (fusion-based preprocessing method). This approach was inspired by chromosomal crossover, which is the transfer of genetic material between homologous chromosomes. In this study, the proposed fusion-based preprocessing method was applied to an open access dataset collected from 29 subjects. Then, features were extracted by the autoregressive model and classified by k-nearest neighbor classifier. We achieved classification accuracy (CA) ranging from 67.57 to 99.70% for the detection of binary mental arithmetic (MA) based EEG signals. In addition to obtaining an average CA of 88.71%, 93.10% of the subjects showed performance improvement using the fusion-based preprocessing method. Furthermore, we compared the proposed study with the common average reference (CAR) method and without applying any preprocessing method. The achieved results showed that the proposed method provided 3.91% and 2.75% better CA then the CAR and without applying any preprocessing method, respectively. The results also prove that the proposed evolutionary preprocessing approach has great potential to classify the EEG signals recorded during MA task.

Objective: To determine whether people with a Sardinian genetic background who live in the megacities of South America have a higher frequency of hypomania than residents of Sardinia. Methods: A community survey of Sardinian immigrants was carried out in four Brazilian metropoles (n=218) and Buenos Aires (n=306). The results were compared with those of a study involving a similar methodology (Mood Disorder Questionnaire [MDQ] as a screening tool) conducted in seven Italian regions, including a sub-sample from Sardinia. Results: There was a higher prevalence of lifetime hypomania among Sardinians living in the Brazilian metropoles than among those living in Sardinia. This result was also consistent with Sardinian immigrants in Buenos Aires. After stratification by sex and age, the lifetime prevalence of MDQ scores ≥ 8 among Sardinians in South-American megacities and Sardinia was 8.6% vs. 2.9%, respectively (p < 0.0001). Conclusions: The higher frequency of hypomania in migrant populations appears to favor an evolutionary view in which mood disorders may be a maladaptive aspect of a genetic background with adaptive characteristics.

Human dignity (HD) in patient care is an important concept in clinical ethics that has various definitions in existing literature. This study aimed at analyzing the concept of HD in patient care. To this end, Rodgers' evolutionary concept analysis was used. For this purpose, scientific databases PubMed, Elsevier, ScienceDirect, Scopus, OVID, Web of Science, CINHAL, IRANDOC, Google Scholar, Magiran, SID and IranMedex were searched fusing the words "human dignity", "patient care" and "ethics". The main criterion for inclusion in the final analysis was the literature published in English and Persian from 2006 to 2016 in online scientific journals within the context of health care disciplines. Ultimately, 21 articles were selected for the study. The attributes of the concept under study were identified in two areas of individual HD and social HD. Antecedents included facilitators and threats, and the consequences consisted of both favorable and unfavorable consequences. HD forms the essence of patient care and is a value-based and humanistic concept based on respect for the integrity of human beings and their beliefs. This concept, with its holistic approach to humans, takes into account all stages of disease, old age and the end of life period. HD in patient care is influenced by cultural, social, spiritual and religious factors, and with its justice-based approach emphasizes equality of all patients and extends patient care to all areas of society rather than restricting it to hospital settings. In this study, a clear definition of HD is introduced.

AIM: Development of compounds with therapeutic application requires the interaction of different disciplines. Several tumors express vasopressin (AVP; arginine vasopressin) receptors with contrasting effects depending on receptor subtype. Desmopressin (dDAVP) is an AVP-selective analog with antiproliferative properties. In this work, an evolutionary approach and a rational strategy were applied in order to design novel AVP analogs. RESULTS: We designed two novel analogs; dDInotocin (dDINT, insect analog), and [V4Q5]dDAVP, and demonstrated the importance of the dDAVP conformational loop for its antiproliferative activity. [V4Q5] dDAVP showed major cytostatic effect on lung cancer cells than dDAVP and its cytostatic effect was abolished by V2R blockade. CONCLUSION: Combination of these strategies could provide the basis for future studies for the development of improved compounds with potential therapeutic applications.

There are two central premises to this evolutionary view of Parkinson disease (PD). First, PD is a specific human disease. Second, the prevalence of PD has increased over the course of human history. Several lines of evidence may explain why PD appears to be restricted to the human species. The major manifestations of PD are the consequence of degeneration in the dopamine-synthesizing neurons of the mesostriatal neuronal pathway. It is of note the enormous expansion of the human dopamine mesencephalic neurons onto the striatum compared with other mammals. Hence, an evolutionary bottle neck was reached with the expansion of the massive nigrostriatal axonal arborization. This peculiar nigral overload may partly explain the selective fragility of the human dopaminergic mesencephalic neurotransmission and the unique presence of PD in humans. On the other hand, several facts may explain the increasing prevalence of PD over the centuries. The apparently low prevalence of PD before the twentieth century may be related to the shorter life expectancy and survival compared to present times. In addition, changes in lifestyle over the course of human history might also account for the increasing burden of PD. Our hunter-gatherers ancestors invested large energy expenditure on a daily basis, a prototypical physical way of life for which our genome remains adapted. Technological advances have led to a dramatic reduction of physical exercise. Since the brain release of neurotrophic factors (including brain-derived neurotrophic factor) is partially exercise related, the marked reduction in exercise may contribute to the increasing prevalence of PD.

RESUMO

The attempt is made to initially arrange in the terms of methodology the area of the research on partner roles in homoerotic relations. These issues have been noticed very early in human history (e.g., different roles performed or bimodal polarization), but only recently has science become interested in this subject. It is suggested to cover all such roles by the term sex-partner roles (SPR) instead of various other terms used and to classify them according to the ethological evolutionary approach into the appetitive and consummatory SPR. Further details of the division are discussed, and the utility of such classification is marked.
